Guangzhou New Baiyun Airport Terminal

Airport terminal steel structure · Guangzhou — Baiyun District

Guangzhou New Baiyun Airport's terminal uses about 21,000 t of steelwork and was designed for a 30-year coating life. Exterior steel uses an arc-sprayed aluminium build-up, interior steel an inorganic zinc silicate system, with thin-film fire protection added up to 8 m above floor level (2-hour rating). The case is taken from Kansai's public project brochure.

Project overview

The main terminal of the new Baiyun Airport measures 325 m × 235 m and uses about 21,000 t of steelwork beneath roughly 165,000 m² of roof. Designed for a 30-year coating life, it is a representative early Chinese hub-airport steelwork protection project. It is documented in Kansai's case book (infrastructure volume).

Corrosion-protection challenges

  • The main building's chevron composite columns rise 14.7–35.7 m, and the long-span steel roof places high demands on adhesion and durability;
  • Interior and exterior zones are managed differently — exterior topcoats must resist UV, interior coatings also serve as fire protection (2-hour rating);
  • Welds and high-strength bolt nodes need on-site touch-up while keeping the system continuous.
