Port machinery and offshore equipment

Abrasion-resistant coating systems for cranes, spreaders, grabs and deck equipment exposed to impact and salt.

CorrosivityC5-M plus mechanical abrasion
Typical service life8–15 years

Port and offshore equipment combines atmospheric corrosion with constant mechanical damage. Impact from containers, abrasive bulk cargo, wire rope and handling equipment removes coating faster than corrosion ever would, so the specification has to balance corrosion protection with wear resistance — and accept that some areas will need planned touch-up.

Recommended coating system

LayerType & DFTProduct examples
PrimerZinc-rich epoxy, 60–80 µmZinc-rich primer
Build coatHigh-build MIO or glass-flake epoxy, 120–200 µmMIO / glass-flake epoxy
TopcoatPolyurethane, 60–80 µm; abrasion-resistant on contact zonesPU / abrasion-resistant topcoat
High-wear zonesGlass-flake or ceramic-filled coating, thicker buildAbrasion-resistant coating

Application critical points

  • Identify the actual wear zones first — spreader contact points, grab lips, cable runs — and specify them differently from the general structure.
  • Abrasion-resistant coatings are not corrosion-resistant coatings. Confirm that the wear layer sits on a properly specified anticorrosive system rather than replacing it.
  • Accept planned maintenance on consumable areas and make it easy: keep the same primer across the machine so local repairs match the surrounding system.
