Wanzhou Second Yangtze River Bridge, Chongqing

Large suspension bridge · Chongqing — Wanzhou

The Wanzhou Second Yangtze River Bridge is a large suspension bridge with a 580 m main span. Its main steelwork — trusses and anchorages — uses a long-life system of zinc-rich epoxy primer, MIO epoxy intermediate and fluorocarbon topcoat. The case is taken from Kansai's public project brochure.

Project overview

The Wanzhou Second Yangtze River Bridge links the main urban area of Wanzhou with the Jiangnan New District. It is 1,148.86 m long overall with a 580 m main span and four traffic lanes, and forms a river crossing in the heart of the Three Gorges reservoir region. The project is documented in Kansai's Industrial Anti-Corrosion Coatings case book (bridges volume).

Corrosion-protection challenges

  • The reservoir surface is humid all year, and condensation in the winter–spring fog season keeps the steelwork permanently wet;
  • Suspension-bridge trusses and main-cable anchorage zones have complex geometry that makes access for coating difficult;
  • As a century-scale structure, the bridge demands far higher colour and gloss retention and durability from its topcoat than ordinary municipal steelwork.
