Shanghai Tower
Fire protection for a 632 m supertall steel structure · Shanghai — Lujiazui
Shanghai Tower rises 632 m over 121 floors; its stair and curtain-wall support steelwork is protected with Interchar® intumescent fire protection to a 1.5-hour fire rating. The project is documented in AkzoNobel's public brochure and the coating work was carried out within the manufacturer's own system.

Project overview
Shanghai Tower is 632 m tall with 121 floors and about 576,000 m² of gross floor area — the tallest building in China. The manufacturer supplied Interchar® intumescent fire protection for its stair and curtain-wall support steelwork; the project is documented in AkzoNobel's brochure.
Fire-protection challenges
- A 1.5-hour fire rating is required for supertall evacuation routes and curtain-wall support steelwork;
- Narrow high-altitude work faces make wet-film thickness and sag control difficult;
- Coastal C3 environment — the fire coating has to bond over an anti-corrosive primer.
Coating system
| Location | System (manufacturer product) | Design parameter |
|---|---|---|
| Stair & curtain-wall support steelwork | Interchar® 1983 intumescent fire protection, ≈200,000 litres | 1.5-hour fire rating |
| Surface preparation & environment | ISO 8501-1 Sa 2.5 / ISO 12944 C3 | Per manufacturer's public statement |
